In recent decades, empirical studies in music cognition examined listeners' perception of the musical structures that underlie the analysis of Western music: conventional forms, tonal and post-tonal structures, or motivic and thematic relationships. The seminar will survey this extensive research, discuss its implications for music theory and analysis, and try to propose research questions and methodologies for further research into the cognition of musical structure.
