Course description
This undergraduate musical analysis course discusses musical style, structure and expression in compositions of Beethoven's "heroic" period (1802-1814). The class concentrates on a limited number of works, each analyzed in detail during 2-3 classes. Listening assignments to other compositions will be given, and recognition tested in an identification examination. The music analyzed include the 3rd and 5th symphonies; the piano sonatas op. 31 nos. 2 & 3, op. 53, and op. 57; the string quartets op. 59, nos. 1 & 2; the 4th and 5th piano concerti, and the 32 variations in C minor, WoO 80.
