הקורס יחקור את המאפיינים הסגנוניים, הצורניים וההבעתיים של התקופה "ההרואית" של בטהובן (1802-1814), בה נוצרו רבות מיצירותיו המוכרות ביותר. ינותחו יצירות מרכזיות של המלחין מתקופה זו, ביניהן: הסימפוניה השלישית (ארואיקה), הסימפוניה החמישית, הסונטות לפסנתר אופ. 31 מס. 2 ו3, אופ. 57 ("אפסיונאטה), ואופ. a81 ("הפרידה"); הרביעייה לכלי קשת אופ. 59 מס. 1 ("רזומובסקי"), הקונצ'רטי הרביעי והחמישי לפסנתר, ו32 הוריאציות בדו מינור. הכרות עם יצירות אחרות של בטהובן מתקופה זו תיבדק באמצעות מבחן האזנה.

 

 

Course Description: This undergraduate musical analysis course discusses musical style, structure and expression in compositions of Beethoven's "heroic" period (1802-1814). The class concentrates on a limited number of works, each analyzed in detail during 2-3 classes. Listening assignments to other compositions will be given, and recognition tested in an identification examination. The music analyzed include the 3rd and 5th symphonies; the piano sonatas op. 31 nos. 2 & 3, op. 53, and op. 57; the string quartets op. 59, nos. 1 & 2; the 4th and 5th piano concerti, and the 32 variations in C minor, WoO 80.

דרישות קדם או תנאי קבלה לשיעור

הקורס מיועד לתלמידי התואר הראשון במוזיקה (מכל המגמות) משנה ב' ומעלה בעלי ידע בסיסי בניתוח הרמוני וצורני של מוזיקה טונאלית. תלמידי התואר השני יתקבלו לקורס בכפוף לתקנות ביה״ס והפקולטה. תלמידים אחרים (תלמידי שנה א׳ בעלי ידע מוקדם, תלמידים מחוגים אחרים, תלמידים חיצוניים) יתקבלו באישור המרצה.

 

Enrollment requirements: Undergraduate music students (musicologists, composers, and performers), 2nd year and above. Basic skills in tonal music analysis are required. Others wishing to participate – please consult with the lecturer.

Grading: 50% - Final examination; 20% - listening examination; 30% - class work

1st semester:

Weeks 1-4. Remedials: rehearsing topics in music analysis, as required (Classical form; Harmonic analysis).

Week 5. Introduction: Beethoven and the classical style

Analysis: Piano Sonata no. 1, Op. 2 no. 1, 1st movement.

Weeks 6-9. Extending boundaries: aspects of Beethoven's middle period style as revealed by the piano sonata op. 57 (Appassionata).

Four related aspects of Beethoven's middle-period style are presented in these classes. These aspects will also serve as guidelines for later classes.

- Beethoven and the musical idioms of the Classical style

- Extending and examining structural limits and boundaries

- Beethoven's structural use of "secondary parameters"

- Motive, theme, and their consequences.

Analysis: Piano sonata no. 23, op. 57 (with comparisons to op. 2 no. 1, previously analysed).

Weeks 10-12. Extending dimensions and structural functions.

Analysis: String Quartet no. 7, op. 59 no. 1.

Weeks 13-14. Theme and motive.

Analysis: Symphony no. 5, in C minor, op. 67.

2nd semester:

Weeks 1-3: The Eroica and Beethoven's heroic narratives.

Analysis: Symphony no. 3, op. 55 (Eroica).

Weeks 4-6: Beethoven's chaconne: experiments in variation form and the multiple identities of a theme.

Analysis: 32 variations in C minor, WoO 80

Weeks 7-10: Beethoven and the Classical concerto: challenging extremes of introversion and extroversion

Analysis: Piano concerto no. 4, in G major, op. 58; Piano concerto no. 5,

Weeks 11-12: Challenging structural functions (2): form as process.

Sonata no. 17, in d minor, op. 31 no. 2 ("Tempst")

Weeks 13-14: Summary and preparation for the final examination
