The course will focus on the most prominent piano concertos of the 20th century composers – Buzoni, Poulenc, Gershwin, Ravel, Bartok, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shnitke. A special emphasis will be given to the following issues: features of the piano concerto as a genre; different types of concerto (Romantic, Neo-classical, Concerto-symphony, etc.); features of piano texture; correlation between solo and orchestra.
The aim of the course is to analyze the connection between the different types of the concerto in the light of the musical language evolution and to research the connection between two maul genres of instrumental music – concerto and symphony.
