The course will study the “Kantionalsatz” and the basics of the Baroque “stylus luxurians” in instrumental composition.
The “variation” principle
Throughout this course, students practice “guided” whole-piece composition. Being assisted, at first by given chorale melodies, later on by given binary dance forms - with their standard cadential patterns – students still do not have to develop entire pieces “from scratch”. However, by designing their own bass lines, students start taking responsibility for the harmonic and cadential structure of the music.
