Course description
A sequel to “Harmony I”. The course is meant for students of composition and conducting; students of music performance and musicology with adequate background and skills may take this course in combination with courses in music analysis and counterpoint instead of “Fundamentals of Musical Styles and Forms II”. In this course, students will acquire in-depth knowledge of functional tonal harmony and will practice writing in a variety of styles based on traditional tonal language. Alongside exercises in bass and melody harmonization as well as free harmony exercises in various styles, students will analyze works pertaining to the periods in question. Special emphasize will be given to standard harmonic progressions, advanced modulation theory as well as chorale harmonization in the style of J.S. Bach. The course will further include a practical component of harmony realization at the keyboard.
