Course description

The course teaches the basics of composition in the “gallant” or “early Classical” style based on 18th century theory and practice. Alongside theoretical analysis, students are required to compose simple pieces, using the knowledge acquired as the course progresses. By the end of the year, students are expected to grasp the basic mechanisms regulating instrumental forms in late 18th century music, and compose full-scale simple forms (minuets) as well as draft larger forms (sonata allegro movements).
