Analysis and Model-based Composition I

Dr. Boris Kleiner

Annual, 2017-2018

Exercise lesson: 4 credits

Course description

The course teaches the basics of composition in the “gallant” or “early Classical” style based on 18th century theory and practice. Alongside theoretical analysis, students are required to compose simple pieces, using the knowledge acquired as the course progresses. By the end of the year, students are expected to grasp the basic mechanisms regulating instrumental forms in late 18th century music, and compose full-scale simple forms (minuets) as well as draft larger forms (sonata allegro movements).

Course grade

70 % final paper; 30% submitted exercises

Course topics:

1st Semester

1. The model-oriented nature of gallant music and historic modes of teaching composition in this style (Italian partimenti, German didactic writings).

2. The principles of Riepel’s and Koch’s theories. The main structural units of late 18th century music: the clause (“Satz”), possibly divided into cola, and the period (not identical with the “period” in modern theory of musical form). The means of structural articulation: the colon (“Einschnitt”) and the stop (“Absatz”). Cadences as major means of structural articulation. The cadential models and their variations.

2.1. The basic 4-bar clause and its articulation.

2.2. The ground stop (“Grundabsatz”), its articulation and embellishment.

2.3. The “change”, or fifth stop (“Quintabsatz” / “Änderungsabsatz”), its articulation and embellishment.

2.4. The final stop (“Schlussabsatz”). The difference between a cadence and a “stop”. The ambivalence of the full perfect cadence as a means of articulation capable of expressing colon, clause or period, according to context.

2.5. Essentials of metric and rhythmical organization of clauses. Counting the measures of a clause. The “pick-up” concept (“Auftakt”). Simple and compound meters. Patterns of inner division of a clause. Essentials of “metric” interrelation among clauses.

3. Combining “melodic units” or clauses into larger structures. The “punctuation” (sequence of stops) as the main principle of classical form. Combining clauses into periods, and periods into a complete composition.

4. The “small” form: some of its punctuation schemes (stop sequences); exercises in practical composition based on 18th century didactics.

4.1. Composing a 4-clause minuet with no modulation. Essentials of the motivic relations among “melodic units”.

4.2. Composing a 4-clause minuet with a modulating first period. 18th century modulation techniques. Riepel's “monte, fonte, ponte” models for the 3rd clause. Introduction of motivic recapitulation as a secondary principle of musical form. Distinction between structural function (defined by the type of “stop”), and “rhethoric/thematic” function (defined by the melody). Using the same melody in various structural functions by modifying the stop sequence.

4.3. Composing a 5-clause minuet: the concept of the recapitulation. The 5-clause minuet as a “large form” in miniature.

5. Extending the clauses.

5.1. Repetition (alongside “transposition” and “progression”).

5.2. Addition (confirming/same-type and refuting/different-type).

5.3. Appendix.

5.4. Combining multiple “melodic units” into a compound sentence by means of “suppressing the stop”. The metrical concept of elision (“Takterstickung”).

5.5. Parenthesis.

5.6. Techniques of “evading the cadence”.

6. Modern analytical theories of classical music. The modern concept of the 8-bar “sentence” and the 8-bar “period” and their 18th-century counterparts. Modern concepts of “binary”, “ternary” and “rounded-binary” forms. Critique of modern theories.

Interim examination:

Written analysis of a classical sonata cycle, all movements of which are in the “small” forms (e.g., partitas by Haydn, etc.).

2nd Semester

7. The “first period” of the “large” form (“first allegro”). Combining 3, 4 and more clauses into a modulating period. The “order of the cadences” and the concept of “modulation” according to modern theory.

7.1. The 6 basic punctuation schemes of the “first period”.

7.1. The “supplement” – an additional final clause as a “subordinate period”.

7.2. The “extended supplement”: a “subordinate period” composed of two clauses. The parenthesis clause.

7.3. The 6 basic punctuation schemes extended by supplements.

7.4. Combining a large number of “melodic units” into a prolonged period, using available techniques of integrating the multiple units into a clause, and the multiple clauses into a period. “Mechanical” expansion of a composition.

7.5. Critique of the 19th century “sonata form” concept as applied to the “first allegro” of the 18th century.

7.6. Practical composition exercises: composing the “first period” of a “first allegro” (a “sonata exposition” according to modern theory). Common rhetoric strategies of developing melodic ideas.

8. The “second half” of the “large” form and its punctuation schemes. Common modulation patterns. 19th-century sonata form theory turning one particular rhetoric strategy into a binding structural principle.

9. A survey of typical instrumental forms in the Classical style. The “lace” or “chain” form as a combination of multiple “small” pieces: simple rondos, variations. The complex forms: the large rondo (“rondo-sonata”) as a combination of both “small-” and a “large-scale” composition principles.

Final examination:

Written analysis of a piece in the “large” form (an allegro movement from a sonata by Haydn, etc.), or composition of a large form on the basis of given themes.

Optional enhancement of the course (in case of exceptionally fast advancement):

10. The 18th century aria.

10.1. Texts suitable for an aria. Aria types and different formal arrangements of text and music. The da capo aria.

10.2. Coordinating musical and textual units. Text repetitions.

10.2. The ritornello.

10.3. Practical composition exercises: composing a da capo aria (as a draft) to given words.

11. The first movement of an instrumental concerto according to Koch.

11.1. Understanding the “first allegro” of a concerto as a combination of the “large form” and the ritornello principle.

11.2. The “first ritornello” as a re-arrangement of the “melodic units” comprising the “first period” of the soloist. Common punctuation schemes of the first ritornello.

11.3. The remaining ritornellos, and the compilation of the whole movement.

11.4. Practical composition exercises: turning a sonata of J. Chr. Bach into a concerto and comparing the result with the same work as achieved by the young Mozart.

12. Recognizing compositional techniques as employed in individual formal solutions – analysis of rare forms.

Final examination:

Written analysis of a larger composition (sonata allegro, or concerto allegro) or composition of a larger form (sonata allegro) on the basis of given musical material, using structural devices as taught in the course.

Recommended literature:

Koch, Heinrich Christoph. Introductory Essay on Composition. Translated, with an Introduction, by Nancy Kovaleff Baker. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1983.

Expected learning outcomes:

Students will acquire thorough knowledge of composition in the 18th century “gallant” style and gather practical experience in analyzing and composing pieces in this style. By proceeding gradually from elementary structures to complex forms, students will grasp essential aspects of music composition and acquire in-depth knowledge of music punctuation, thematic development, etc. The course further serves to highlight crucial differences between concepts of musical form in 18th century treatises and in later analytic literature
