Course description
This course is designed to familiarize the students with the music of Alban Berg through a multifaceted (theoretical, analytical, and hermeneutical) approach.
Concepts and theories concerning atonality, dodecaphonism and serialism will be reviewed in the context of Alban Berg's music.
In addition to analytical concerns, issues like the following will be explicated and discussed:
- Tensions and "contradictions" in the mental world of Alban Berg
- Secret codes (encrypted messages) and biographical elements in Alban Berg's music
- Intertextual links between: Wozzeck and Lulu, Wozzeck and Pelléas et Mélisande, Lulu and Don Giovanni.
