The course focuses on one of the most important objects in the ancient Greek world: the decorated ceramic vase. We will discuss the entire process by which the vase was manufactured and decorated, starting from the moment the clay was thrown on the wheel and until the vase was sold for use. We will discuss the shapes of the vases and their usage, the decorating methods, the various decorations and the meaning of the visual image. How did the decorated vase help to shape the identity of its users? We will consider the vase as an archaeological finding and its contribution to the understanding of the ancient Greek society.
