Course description

The course will examine Modern Art in Japan, and will be taught by Professor Gennifer Weisenfed (Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Duke University), and Dr. Ayelet Zohar (Art History, TAU). The different subjects discussed will consider the rise of Modern Art in Japan, and how the political, social and cultural shift Japan was going through since the mid-19th century, designed it as a nation-state, but also as an Empire, that colonized East Asian countries, by war, settlement, and other violent methods. We shall look into these transformations affected self-image on a personal and national levels, and how these affected the work of different artists.

Since Prof. Weisenfeld will stay only for a short period in Israel, and for the purpose of making the most out of her visit, the last three weeks of the course will be intensive with an extra Wednesday evening and Friday mornings sessions. Students registering for this course will commit to all meetings, and at any rate, no more than three absences are permitted.
