  Domestic Architecture and Decoration in the Italian Renaissance

Course description

The course will examine the domiciles in the Renaissance, within the social-cultural and political contexts. The course will relate to three aspects of the  private palaces and villas :

 

·       Architectural language, including acquaintance with the most prominent architects and their architectural ideas; central theories in architecture; and stylistic characteristics. We shall examine the visual and literary sources of inspiration, and the influence of the Renaissance architect on the generations that followed.

 

·       Interior decoration of the domestic buildings (frescoes, sculptures, etc.), including acquaintance with the various artists; discussion of the iconographic programs; and a study of stylistic characteristics.

 

·       The idea of the private garden: structure, sculptures, fountains, etc.
