Course description

19th century German composer Richard Wagner first coined the term Gesamtkunstwerk in reference to opera and musical dramas. Later on, an extension of the term applies it to visual, multimedia artworks, based on a process of multidisciplinary research studies.

Throughout this course students would become familiar with exemplary works that explore the spectators' variable immersion experiences and the various media used in their creation. The course provides students with academic tools aimed at examining the changing boundaries of Western, and especially Israeli art's artistic medium.  Next to detailed analyses of the works themselves, the course discusses constitutive texts that deal with critical appreciations of interpretative publications: from texts concerned with the elimination of  barriers between materials and techniques of mixed-media works to those dealing with social, political and economic aspects involved in the creation process of such works.
