Course description

This seminar examines the manner in which artists, cultural practitioners, and activists intervene in and mobilize public spaces as part of struggles for equality and human rights.  It focuses on interventionist strategies such as street exhibitions, demonstrations, direct actions, and tactical media, including the internet and social media. These strategies are explored through different theories of the public sphere by scholars such as Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas, Judith Butler, Michael Warner, and Lauren Berlant. Subjects discussed are citizen and activist photography, Forensic architecture, public art, community based art, and performance.
