Course description
This seminar familiarizes students with the major theoretical and critical concepts through which contemporary art is discussed. At the same time, it exposes them to a broad range of artistic strategies such as site specificity, performance art, and appropriation that inform contemporary art. It addresses artistic practices in relation to specific historical and cultural contexts and focuses on important shifts within artistic production in relation to the role of the artist, the status of the art object, and modes of exhibition.  It aims to expose students to the major artistic debates of recent years surrounding public space, identity politics, collectivity, and relational aesthetics. In particular, it examines the effect of globalization on contemporary art and the emergence of new forms of intervention in sovereign forms of power as well as cooperation with global capital.
