Pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela have crossed Europe from medieval to present times. On these routes, numerous churches and hospices were erected, in which pilgrim badges, souvenirs and other objects were acquired by the devoted visitors. What role did art play in this cult? What was the purpose of the journey and how did medieval and Early Modern art served the pilgrims to its fulfillment? How did these works of art prime the expectations and experiences of the pilgrims? How was art received? The seminar will focus on art and ceremony at pilgrimage sites along the “primitive way” from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as on cult objects and their function within the cultural practice of pilgrimage. Each student will write an essay that will be designated for publication.
