Between the 5th and the 12th century, the Adriatic Sea served as a locus of cultural and artistic exchange, a point of transformation of mosaics between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, between Constantinople and the ports of Ravenna, Poreč, Torcello, and Venice. This seminar will focus on the ways by which the mosaics mediated the notion of time, memory, and the Imperial through form, matter, and materiality, and especially that of especially that of gold and its role in producing the temporalities of art.
