Pilgrimage routes to Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela have crossed
Europe
from medieval to present times. On these routes numerous churches and hospices were erected, in which pilgrim badges, souvenirs and other objects were acquired by the devoted visitors. What role did art play in this cult? What was the purpose of the journey and how did medieval art guide the pilgrims to its fulfillment? How did the works of art prime the expectations and experiences of the pilgrims? How was art received? The course will focus on art and ceremony at pilgrimage sites between the 12th-13th century, as well as on cult objects and their function within the cultural practice of pilgrimage.
