Course description

In 1863 the French Poet Charles Baudelaire called artists of his time to abandon their occupation with classic, heroic or religious beauty, instead focus on the aesthetic of everyday life. Thereby, in his essay “Painter of Modern Life”, described the character of a new artist that deals with the space of everyday. In this class we will discuss this artistic tradition, which had been formulated by Baudelaire in the 19th century, yet turned to be central in the art practice of the 20th century. We will examine how the photography and photographic images (Vernacular photography) played a special role in this practice and how they influenced on the development of new artistic genres. In addition, we will discuss the ways in which dealing with the everyday have provided for artists an alternative to reflect on knowledge and power in domestic and urban spaces. The attempt in this class will be to map different artistic expressions to the everyday objects and spaces while concerning with their cultural, political and theoretical representations.
