Course description

Interpretations of Roman painting and mosaic art tend to take different directions, according to different approaches and views. While a mythological image might be interpreted by some as symbolizing social practices, others might interpret the same image as a reflection of a religious worldview. Such different viewpoints are typical to topics such as initiation, the abduction of women, and others. According to current perceptions and post-structural approaches, there is room for a variety of meanings. In this course we shall discuss the multiple viewpoints of interpretation of Roman mural paintings and mosaics – their social contexts on the one hand, and their religious and spiritual contexts on the other hand. Among the topics for discussion are: Dionysus and the Mystery cults; heroes and initiation rituals; the myths of Narcissus; Ariadne, Psyche, and the meanings of sleep; landscape, still life and the meaning of mimesis; the cycle of Aphrodite.
