Course description

The Via Dolorosa is no doubt one of the most important landmarks of modern day Jerusalem, a prime pilgrimage destination for Christian visitors to the Holy Land for many generations. It is no secret that the Via Dolorosa, even when it is seen as the historical path that Jesus walked on his way to crucifixion, was formed over many centuries and was altered many times before assuming its modern shape. However, few people are aware that the process of shaping the Via Dolorosa continues to this day and that changes continue to take place, literally in front of our eyes. In the framework of this course I would like to combine studying the visual and historical aspects of the Via Dolorosa with more practical aspects of its preservation and restoration (or absence of such) that are currently taking place along the route of the Sorrowful Way in Jerusalem. The course is based on a weekly reading in English (home reading is obligatory). The course includes tours in Jerusalem.
