Course description

This course provides a critical survey of the major developments in nineteenth-century European art. “The long nineteenth century” (1789-1914) is characterized by frequent stylistic transformations, which will be examined within their broader cultural, historical, and political contexts. A strong emphasis will be put on close examination of works of art in different media (painting, sculpture, drawing, print), and thinking about them through various interpretive models. Among the themes we will address in looking at works of art are questions of modernism, artistic innovation and relation to tradition, genre definitions and hierarchies, and public versus private settings of display. In this class students will learn to identify and describe works of art, analyzing them by making self-conscious use of sources, both visual and textual.
