Course description

The introductory course offers a general survey of major artworks, concepts and terms in the arts of Islamic people and lands – Arabs, Persians, and Turks. It focuses on figural arts, architecture, objects, calligraphy and ornament, introducing students to the ways of looking at Islamic artworks and interpreting their subtler meanings. Part II: The Splendour, explores Islamic architecture, art and painting during the later Middle Ages, from the rise of the Turkish dynasties in the eleventh century until the eighteenth century. Amongst other artwork, we shall be dealing with the evolution of Islamic architecture and the figurative image in Persian and Indian-Mughal painting.
