Course description
 This is the third course of the four compulsory courses forming the "Introduction to the History of the Theatre" for 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students. In this course we follow the European theatre in different countries and theatre cultures during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. We read tragedies, comedies and dramas written by Lope de Vega and Calderon de la Barca, Corneille, Moliere and Racine, Marivaux and Beaumarchais, Goldoni and Gozzi, Goethe, Schiller, Heinrich von Kleist and Georg Büchner, in their artistic-socio-cultural contexts. We analyze their dramatic techniques, their performative language and their poetic and aesthetic conventions. We follow the development of the architecture of the European theatre as well as its conditions of production and performance and discuss the emergence the research into questions concerning acting, dramaturgy and the reception of the performances.
