Course description

The body is an existential factor that enables, defines and characterizes human life. However, within the Christian culture, which was dominant in Shakespeare’s time, the body was often perceived in negative terms as a source of temptation and sin. This clash between the existential and the ethical view was rooted in the split between matter and spirit, and between body and soul, which were a central principle of Shakespearian culture. Nonetheless, Shakespeare granted the body prominent roles, and multiple meanings, enabling the exploration of the cultural approach and its values. The seminar’s aim is to explore how Shakespeare problematized the cultural values, while presenting images of the body and its parts that relate to personal existence and to the social and political order.
