Course description
This course deals with the various meanings of the term "realism" as an aesthetic category as well as with the tension between reality and its representation in modern dramatic works. Different theoretical approaches to the representation of reality and their applicability to dramatic works by Ibsen, Lorca, Brecht and Beckett will be discussed on the basis of modernist ideology and its influence on the status of human beings in society following the rise of science and the decline of religion.
