Course description

The Hebrew Bible does not contain dramatic plays in the sense that can be found in Classical Greek culture (although some biblical texts – such as the book of Job or the Song of Songs – were "suspected" to be plays). Later on, when Jewish playwrights turned to adapt the biblical sources to the theatre, they often returned, and in complex ways, to the classical dramatic structures developed in the West: Tragedy, Comedy, and Pastoral. During the seminar, we will follow the various attempts of approaching biblical myths through drama and theatre, we'll reread the Biblical sources theatrically, and explore how dramatic forms reinterpret the Bible.
