In recent years, theatre in Israel was put again in the midst of fierce political debates that raised questions regarding the civic role of theatre; the relations between State and art, and between center and periphery; and the onstage presence of voices that challenge national hegemony. The course will take these debates as a starting point and will place them within wider historical, social and political contexts. We will examine processes within Israeli and Palestinian theatre in recent decades by focusing on theatre as a space in which cultural myths are staged and undermined, and where society's fundamental conflicts are embodied and spoken.
