Course description

“Identity,” “gender,” and “class” are central subjects of theatre and drama ever since the art of theatre exists. Although almost any play can be analyzed through these lenses, in modern and contemporary theatre and performance as well as in theatre theory, there is a growing interest in the role that the theatre plays in revealing and problematizing social constructions of identity. In this course, we will discuss plays and performances that deal with identity related issues through a wide range of dramatic, theatrical, and performative techniques and styles. The subjects we will examine include relations between class and gender; feminist theatre; actor-character dialectics; casting and color-blind casting; the “Other” in the theatre. The course will be accompanied by video excerpts of the works we will be discussing.
