The purpose of this course is to provide first year students with guidance in their new university environment and equip them with the necessary initial tools for conducting research. The course will thus cover the basics of accessing research materials and using library facilities, as well as learning and developing academic writing skills. Reading and analyzing texts will be taught with an emphasis on developing independent and critical thinking. A limited number of texts will serve as the basis for demonstrating academic research and discussion, the consolidation of a topic, the formation of an argument and finally an individual research question. In order to practice these skills, students will complete various group tasks, participate in discussions and give presentations in class. Students will also work independently and submit home assignments. Personal guidance and close supervision will be provided throughout the course.
