Course description

Visual images are significant elements of drama that open a path to different ways of seeing the characters and their worlds. Shakespeare play-texts are loaded with visual images such as depictions of the characters’ appearance, portrayal of nature and images of space and place. These images are connected to both the fictional world and the actual culture, and insert into the drama additional layers of action and meaning. The seminar has a twofold aim: to explore “key images” in selected texts and their dramatic roles in the context of both the fictional world and the actual visual culture; and to study their theatrical realization in selected productions while following their metamorphosis in varying historical and cultural contexts.
