In this seminar we will examine how Israeli experimental theatre creators adapt and stage classical drama. Since the 1960s worldly renowned directors including Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, Richard Schechner, Lee Breuer, Thomas Ostermeier, Ivo Van-Hove, and others have been creating stylistically and ideologically innovative and relevant theatre by reinterpreting world classical drama. In this seminar we will look into the Israeli case and study experimental adaptations of classical drama and canonical texts within Israeli culture, society, and reality. The course will integrate the study of independent Israeli theatre creators, theatre adaptations, intercultural theatre and cultural transference, connections between classical drama and the Israeli reality, and methodologies of theatre historiography. We will watch together performances and meet with Israeli directors. Participants will be invited to write seminar papers on a wide variety of Israeli theatre adaptations of classical drama.
