Course description

"There's no lack of void" said Estragon to Vladimir in Beckett's Waiting for Godot.  Indeed, there are multiple and varied phenomena that we shall relate to the performance of void and explore its concrete practices. Among them, empty stages, acting technique with neutral masque, monochromatic scenography, as well as painting and screen, stasis, silence or silencing, erasure of body and subject, negating the senses and performances of blindness, representations of death, and staging memory or oblivion. These phenomena, that have common denominators, are not created in a vacuum but rather anchored in a fascinating and radical theatrical and interdisciplinary artistic discourse. In the seminar we shall examine topics and cases, throughout the 20th century avant-garde and contemporary ones. We shall discus the performance of void and the act of voiding while asking, as suggested by Alfred Barr – why every generation must paint its own black square?
