Course description
In the beginning of the term we will examine classical concepts and concepts which view the sublime as an intellectual experience which does not coincide with the symmetry that between addressees in a dialogue. We will examine the writings of Longinus, Burk, Kant and others. We will also describe the Romantic Sublime in poetry by Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge and the Shelleys. We will study short stories from the French and American Realism and move onto to study the everyday philosophy of dialogue as it appears in Wittgenstein and Derrida. We will then explain the transition from the sublime to the dialogical in one play by Stoppard, paintings, sculpting, video art, and films. These studies will be guided by texts of critics from Michael Fried and Stanley Cavell to Denis Diderot and Griselda Pollock.
