Course description
The connection between art, science and technology is known for centuries. Yet, new technological and scientific developments of the last decades, alongside with interdisciplinary approach in research that emerged at the same time, led to enhanced inquiries over the possible interactions between these fields. Artists using new modes of expression enabled by those developments, analyze the ontological and epistemological meanings, as well as the political, social, economical and cultural implications of new technologies and scientific practices on human existence. Questions concerning the nature of life and the mechanisms that construct them, the limitations of the human cognition, the relations between the natural and the artificial, the inadequacy of representation, as well as new definitions of space and time, are at the heart of their inquiries. In this seminar we will analyze the ways in which artists expand their artistic tools by adopting technologies and scientific practices as part of their artistic creativity (from fields such as Cybernetics, Biology, Nanotechnology, Tele-Communication, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life). In this respect we will examine the linkage between new paradigms emerging from
scientific and technological developments and concepts originating in the philosophical and critical thought of the end of the 20th century.
