Course description

This course provides a critical survey of the major developments in nineteenth-century art and their relationship with the birth of the modern museum. “The long nineteenth century” is characterized by frequent stylistic transformations, as well as shifts in modes of display and consumption of art by growing publics. This course follows these shifts, from the invention of the Salon in the 18th century, to the birth of the “White Cube” in the 20th century. In this class, students will learn to identify and describe works of art, analyzing them by making use of both visual and textual sources.
