One of the main aims of schooling is providing students with specific knowledge in a range of topics, one of which is language. Nevertheless, language is not just another subject matter, but rather an area that exists in each and every curricular subject, for language serves as a basis for acquiring knowledge and understanding the learning materials, and allows production of this knowledge linked to previous knowledge. One of the challenges teachers in all content areas face is how to make content accessible to a variety of student populations, to enable literate reading and production. This course will focus on the aspects which characterize school language and illustrate means for enhancing and developing literacy in the classroom against the backdrop of the multilingual Israeli context.
