Course description

Epic Poetry in Ancient Greece and Rome

In this course students will be introduced to what is considered the most ancient poetic genre in Greece, and then in Rome: the epics. We will review the history of this genre and examine its characteristics in each one of these cultures. We will read from the Greek epics of Homer, Hesiod and Apollonius Rhodius, and from the Roman epics of Vergil and Ovid.

No previous knowledge required. Students’ duties: full attendance, reading assignments and active participation; final examination.
