This course focuses issues in the interpretation of ancient art. We will deal, among other issues, with the ways to define ancient art, the (modern) distinction between art and craft, the relations between art in the service of the elite to art for the common people, the various aspects on art objects in archaeology (context, function, and place within an assemblage), and the complex relations between pictorial representations and texts.
