This course aims to give students a basic overview of ancient Egyptian history and culture from the Predynastic Period to the end of the New Kingdom (ca. 4000-1100 BCE). During the first three lessons, we will survey basic concepts – the geography of Egypt and its natural resources, Egyptian attitudes to their neighbours, society and kingship, and the Egyptian script and its decipherment. From the fourth lesson onwards, each lesson will be devoted to a specific period, and survey historical events, religion, kingship, burial, important texts, and foreign relations at that particular period.
