Course description

The exercise complements the survey course of Dr. Ilai Rowner: “France in the 19th century through Literature, Art and Cinema”. The purpose of this exercise is to deepen the student’s knowledge of the canonical works of French Culture in the 19th century and to provide the student with the necessary skills for analyzing these works.  During the exercise we will focus on some of the works that are taught in the survey course, which will be analyzed in detail, drawing on critical literature. We will read different texts from the works of Balzac, Hugo, Flaubert, Baudelaire, Sand, Maupassant and more. Through this analysis the student will become acquainted with the manner in which fundamental cultural events, discussed in the course of the introduction, are represented and transformed by the French artists of the 19th century. A large part of the exercise will be devoted to classroom discussions, which will demand the preparation and the active participation of the student.
