Course description
All human fields of action and relate to polemics and polemic exchanges. Given this situation, polemics also stimulate researches and contribute to the development of knowledge. In the course we will analyze selected polemical texts by means of various methodologies from the study of controversies. We will present Marcelo Dascal's typology of polemics, which distinguishes between Dispute, Controversy and Discussion; we will learn about rhetorical elements that serve the opponents, and we will identify principles of communication that shape the pragmatic form of polemical dialogs. The main fields to be discussed are Religions, Politics, Economics, and Managements studies: we shall attempt to establish a thread common to Talmudic controversies, medieval disputations, modern politics and the processes of business strategy.
