Course description

Discourse is defined as "language in use". This course is interested in the ways language is used in the context of digital communication technologies, exploring the co-creation and bidirectional influence of language and technology. The students will explore issues of technology and language change in the tension between orality, literacy and iconicity; analyze genres of multimodal discourse that are unique to digital technologies in affinity with identity performance and community formation, and experiment with Marxist and Foucault inspired critical discourse analysis of social media practices.
