Course description

Feelings have always been an essential element in every attempt at persuasion. Advertisement, speeches, tweets, polemics and private conversations – they all often convey the feelings of the speaker. At the same time, however, they try to elicit specific feelings in the audience through strategies that are often much more calculated than we'd like to think. This course will deal with the role of feelings (Pathos) in the attempts to deliver messages, to steer opinions and direct decisions, and to manipulate. Students will learn and utilize various frameworks and research instruments while analyzing written, oral, verbal and visual texts. Lessons, exercises and discussions will deal with the following questions: why should one appeal to someone's feelings in order to persuade him/her, and how does one stir in the audience the very feeling one wants to elicit?

Attendance is mandatory.
