The course will present the basic concepts of Lacanian psychoanalysis, alongside the theoretical and therapeutic concepts that are particular to it. The three orders of mental life that Lacan defined (the Real, Symbolic and Imaginary) will be presented and the notions of 'subject' and 'other' will be discussed. We shall distinguish between two forms of the other, the specular (small) and the big. The course will then explain Lacan's notion of 'enjoyment' and the way it distinguishes between the genders ('sexuation') and affects their relationships. We shall compare the differences between Freud and Lacan in their views of the unconscious and the body , and see how these differences differentiate between the modern and the postmodern respectively. We shall read excerpts from Lacan's writings and try to understand how his style is tied up with his cultural traditions on the one hand and specific ideas on the other.
