Course description

A central theme in modernity is the question of identity. It arises in diverse contexts, both on the personal level of the individual and the collective level of the community or any kind of social group, in philosophy, psychology, history, or sociology and anthropology, in gender studies or in art and literature. It has, accordingly, many varied meanings and interpretations. Actually, the question of identity remains an open question, which reflects the changes in our modes of life and in our cultural frame of mind, the changes that are responsible in effect for shaping it.

The course will investigate the birth of modern identity and its characteristics in comparison to the pre-modern era, its conceptual and socio-historical roots, as well as some of its materialization options – from the humanistic turn of the Renaissance to the digital turn of the twentieth century.
