The course will survey the dynamics of changes that gradually transformed ancient Greek religion, from the appearance of the Greek city (polis) in Archaic times to Early Imperial Times. The first part of the course will be devoted to the classical form of ancient Greek religion (Archaic and Classical times), whereas the rest of the semester will survey the subsequent changes that occurred in Hellenistic and early Imperial times, and investigate some of the factors—religious, political, social, cultural, and economic—that may explain them. The emergence of new cults (Asklepios, the so-called Oriental religions) will be surveyed, as well.
