Pre-requisite: Physiological systems of the human body
Course Description
Principles and practices of stem cells, cells and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine underlying strategies for employing selected cells, biomaterial scaffolds, incorporating genes, and mechanical loading and culture conditions for the regeneration of tissues and organs in vitro and in vivo.
List of Topics
1. Scaffolds: Introduction, design criteria, emerging rules for organ regeneration biologically active scaffold.
2. Scaffold composition: natural and synthetic scaffolds- effect on cells.
3. Cells: Introduction; cell culture, cell culture types, tissue culture, cell culture and cell lines. Nutritional requirements, growing conditions.
4. Embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells and cord blood
5. Stem cells behavior in vitro
6. Clinical implementation for mesenchymal stem cells
7. The influence of environmental factors including mechanical loading and culture conditions.
8. Print tissues and organs for regenerative medicine
9. Gene therapy: techniques for incorporating genes into cells and scaffolds.
10. Methods for fabricating tissue-engineered products and devices for implantation.
11. Applications: Examples of tissue engineering-based procedures currently employed clinically are analyzed as case studies: skin and nerve regeneration.
12. Vascularization of engineered tissues: blood vessels, cardiac muscle, urinary tissue/ organs. Musculoskeletal tissue engineering; bone, cartilage.
13. Presentations and seminars.
Course requirements: 30% class presentation, 70% final project
