Course description
Course Objectives: To provide students with a conceptual and practical introduction to Remote Sensing (RS) including: The fundamental characteristics of electromagnetic radiation and how the energy interacts with Earth surface materials; Remote sensing platforms and instruments, and platforms and sensors to be launched; Techniques of digital image display, processing and analysis; Image classification and analyses; Remote sensing of vegetation, water, soils, minerals, geomorphology, and urban landscape. It includes a brief overview of fundamentals and an introduction to applications of various kinds of remote sensing including aerial photography, multispectral and hyperspectral satellite remote sensing, active remote sensing and thermal remote sensing.
Lab and Homework
Five individual homework assignments in ENVI software will be turned in and marked. Three computational tasks will be required to submit. Late homework will be marked down 10% for every day late. Students are required to read designated chapters for each week. Using ENVI, the students will study remote sensing data related to the lecture topics. There will be mid-term examination based on lecture notes and reading assignments. There will also be occasional computer lab homework assignments and/or class presentations. Attendance to both lecture and lab is required in the normal circumstances and forms a portion of your grade.
