This course covers a broad range of natural hazards occurring in Space, in the Atmosphere and on Earth. It starts with two classes introducing hazard, risk and vulnerability assessment, as well as natural process monitoring, forecasts, predictions and alert systems. Space hazard classes present space weather and solar storms . Atmospheric hazard classes address a wide range of meteorological and climate hazards, including storms, floods, hurricanes, drought, heat waves and wildfires. Earth hazards classes focus on various slope instabilities, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. The penultimate class is dedicated to mitigation techniques, education and prevention, vulnerability assessment, resilience enhancement, rescue and reconstruction as well as the social and economic impact of these hazards. The last class is an open forum during which each participant presents a 3-minute long TED talk on a natural hazard of his/her choice and innovative mitigation strategies.
